Echinacea Echinacea has to be one of the most recognised and widely used herbal medicines and with good reason, not only has it been widely researched as having various actions and uses but it is probably one of the most appropriate herbs of the moment with much discussion and concern about the swine flu and other immune related diseases. So I have chosen to discuss one of the most potent immune supportive herbs at a herbalists disposal!

Echinacea is a perennial herb with very beautiful dull purple petals and a conical head. It usually grows to about one meter in height. The whole plant can be used for medicinal purposes. This herb is native to the USA. Some of the active compounds found in Echinacea are polysaccharides, alkylamides, esters such as echinacein, flavonoids and essential oils.

Echinacea has been found to enhance the function of the immune system by stimulating specific white blood cells called phagocytes, these cells are responsible for digesting negative agents in the body, such as bacteria, viruses and toxins. It has also demonstrated an antiviral action on herpes simplex, and the influenza virus. This is why echinacea is useful for conditions like bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, colds, flu, candidiasis. Due to its effect on the immune system and its anti-inflammatory action it can be useful in supporting most systems in the body including the digestive tract, the respiratory tract, and urinary tract.

Echinacea strong anti-inflammatory action is part of the reason as to why I often use it topically, I have found that it reduces swelling and healing time. It is useful externally for wounds, acne, boils, ulcers and abscesses.

I use this particular herb extensively it is very rare that any of my herbal formulas for colds and flu during the winter go with out echinacea in them.

Some of the cautions to be aware of with echinacea; if you have had a transplant or are on immunosuppressive medications you should consult your health professional before taking any immune stimulating herbs including echinacea. Allergic reactions to the herb have been reported if you experience any adverse effects after taking echinacea you should stop taking it immediately, and seek advice from your health professional.
