Benefits of yoga during pregnancyThere is no doubt that both pre and post-natal yoga classes have been growing in popularity in recent times, with most yoga studios offering various classes for mums-to-be. People often claim that yoga is useful as a safe form of exercise during pregnancy and at most offers some stress relief during the maternal months.

So just how beneficial is yoga for pregnant mums? One study in particular looked into yoga and its effects on labour pain and birth outcomes. Sixty-six pregnant women took part in the study one group underwent six one-hour yoga classes including postures, chanting, breathing and meditation. The group was also asked to undertake home practice three or more times a week for 10 to 12 weeks.

The researchers found that those who practised yoga throughout their pregnancy

  • Experienced a higher level of maternal comfort both during labour and post delivery, in comparison to those who did no yoga.
  • Exhibited significantly lower pain scores during labour and two hours post-delivery than those who did no practice of yoga.
  • Interestingly those who practised yoga had a significantly shorter first stage of labour.

This study supports the practice of yoga for women who wish to increase maternal comfort, decrease pain during labour and reduce the length of their labour.

Before undertaking any new activity, however, it is recommended that you consult your health practitioner. As a naturopath I will continue endorsing a regular practice of yoga for future mums to be.
