Research supports the practice of Hatha yoga for type 2 diabetes!

Type 2 diabetes is a growing health issue in western nations, it is largely a lifestyle related disease with poor and a sedentary way of life contributing to the development of the condition. There are several holistic therapies that are useful in supporting those with type 2 diabetes, however one major concern is increasing the amount of physical exercise performed by those with type 2 diabetes. In 2008 271 people with type 2 diabetes participated in a research study that looked at the effects of Hatha yoga and conventional physical training on oxidative stress, anti-oxidant status and the lipid profile of participants.

Participants in the Hatha yoga group were required to attend a two hour yoga class once a week, the class included breathing exercises, dynamic , yogic postures and relaxation. They were also given a guide for home practice. Blood samples were taken before, during and after the program.

Yoga for type 2 diabetesThe results showed a significant decrease 29.48% in fasting blood glucose at six months. Total cholesterol was also significantly lowered in both groups. Very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) a type of cholesterol that is associated with coronary artery disease also showed a significant reduction after the six month period of practicing Hatha yoga. Superoxide dismutase an enzyme known to have a strong anti-oxidant action and thought to offer protection from vascular degeneration associated with diabetes had increased by 24.08% at six months.

This research not only supports the regular practice of Hatha yoga for those who have type 2 diabetes but shows its relevance for anyone who is suspected of being on the track to developing or has metabolic syndrome, if your blood test shows a high triglyceride and cholesterol result or you live a very sedentary lifestyle then consider taking regular yoga classes.
